Jiangsu launched a campaign to mark the World Food Day and Food Security Awareness Week in Kunshan City on October 15, one day ahead of the 40th World Food Day.
Xia Chunsheng, director of Jiangsu's Food and Strategic Reserves Bureau, said Jiangsu is a large province of both food production and consumption, and with about 0.8 mu of arable land per person, the province’s foundation of food security is not solid enough.
Xia also said saving food does not mean there’s already a food crisis happening and the campaign is to remind everyone to pay great attention to food security. The province’s Regulations on the Grain Circulation went into effect in March this year and called for efforts to support food saving and consumption in healthy ways. It’s expected the weekly campaign will motivate more people to save food and contribute to food security.
Since 2015, Jiangsu’s annual grain production remained over 35 billion kilograms for five years in a row. This year, the summer grain production reached 13.75 billion kilograms, 150 million kilograms more than in last year. The province is also expecting another bumper year in autumn grain output.
