The  Shanghai-Suzhou-Nantong Yangtze River Bridge that opened on July 1 has reshaped the public transportation pattern and given rise to new travelling choices.

The combined bridge, which has a six-lane motorway on the upper deck and four railway tracks below, has encouraged many people to drive themselves to destinations in the Shanghai direction and mitigated the traffic jam on the Suzhou-Nantong bridge, traditionally a key link to the metropolis. On the weekends, Changshu and Zhangjiagang cities have more and more tourists, and meanwhile the Shanghai-bound trains at 9 am are often crowded.

Due to the new bridge and COVID-19, the long-distance bus service from Nantong didn’t see a rising demand. In July, long-distance buses transported over 612,000 passengers, down 4.2 percent than in June.  Among those passengers, 24,882 people went to the direction of Shanghai, down 46.55 percent from the previous month.

In July, passengers departing from Nantong Railway Station reached 252,400, down 25 percent or 86,000 people than in last July, but a rise of 44.7 percent or 78,000 people than in June. Nantong West Railway Station saw off 110,000 passengers in last month. The arriving passengers from southern Jiangsu reached 142,000 at the two railway stations, or 4,581 passengers per day.
