The Jiangsu-Canada Green and Low-carbon Development Summit opens in Nanjing, Jiangsu province on October 14.
The summit was organized by the Foreign Affairs Office of Jiangsu Provincial Government and Forestry Innovation Investment (FII), which helps create, maintain and diversify markets for forest products on behalf of British Columbia, Canada.
The event offered an opportunity to have exchange on issues such as governance, policy innovation, technology research and case studies in the field of low carbon development, and inspired new ideas for cooperation between the two sides.
Jiangsu has long maintained close cooperation with Ontario, B.C. and Saskatchewan in Canada, achieving fruitful results in economic and trade cooperation, environmental protection, sci-tech innovation, and people-to-people exchanges, especially in the field of green and low-carbon cooperation.
Dominic Barton, Canada’s Ambassador to China, said that a global response is required to cope with climate change and Canada has accumulated rich experience in the protection and utilization of forest resources.
He also said Canadian companies are willing to share their designs and leading technologies with their counterparts in China, helping the country and Jiangsu achieve carbon neutrality as soon as possible.
Lan Heping, charge d'affaires of China’s embassy in Canada, said the prospects for cooperation are very promising as two countries already enjoy a long history of working together in climate change response and environment protection.
She hopes Jiangsu and B.C. can actively share their practices in green development, jointly launch pragmatic projects, and play a positive role in the economic recovery in the post-pandemic era as well as boosting the cooperation between two countries.
At the opening ceremony, the Foreign Affairs Office and FII signed a Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation.
The Jiangsu Provincial International Exchange Centre, the Green Building Industry Cluster Demonstration Zone of Wujin District, Changzhou City, and Canada’s International Institute for Environmental Studies signed a letter of intent for cooperation on China Canada Low Carbon Cooperation Development.
The summit also saw the launch of an initiative on low-carbon building by 26 organizations from Jiangsu and Canada.
In addition, top experts and scholars from the two countries gave keynote speeches on topics including international cooperation on global decarbonization, wood-frame construction and Vancouver's Embodied Carbon Strategy.
