The Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders commemorated the 79th anniversary of Japan's surrender in World War II (WWII) on August 15.
The 14-year arduous struggle of the Chinese people against the invaders culminated in Japan’s unconditional surrender on August 15, 1945.
The event was attended by 50 participants, including descendants of Nanjing Massacre survivors and student representatives. It began with singing of the national anthem at 9 a.m. Participants then watched the film “Countdown to Surrender”, which depicts Japan's surrender ceremony in Nanjing on September 9, 1945, as well as significant events and milestones 50 days before Japan's surrender.
Among the participants was Li Yuhan, the great-grandson of Xia Shuqin, a survivor of the Nanjing Massacre. "As a descendant of survivors, I have the responsibility to preserve the memory of the Nanjing Massacre and spread the historical truth," said Li, who has joined a volunteer team dedicated to sharing the history of the Nanjing Massacre.
At the event’s conclusion, all participants gathered in front of the wall of handprints of wartime veterans, where they signed their names on a "V" shaped board.
