The reopened Nanhu Café, featuring a retro 1980s style, has become a popular instagrammable venue.

Located at No. 5 Nanhu Road in Jianye District, the café first opened in 1985 as the first roadside café in Nanjing City. Now rebuilt on its original location, it features a green color palette and the interior decoration and furnishings all pay tribute to the style of the 1980s.

Less than 30 square meters, the café is always packed with customers of all ages from early in the morning.

Zheng Jihong, 64, said she still remembers clearly the opening of the café in 1985 when she was 26 years old. "As soon as the work was finished, we rushed to the store to see how it looked exactly," Zheng said.

"I had not been to such a fashionable place before. I remembered a cup of coffee was sold for 8 cents, but I still couldn't afford it, as the cost was enough to buy a bowl of noodles at that time," Zheng added.

The store's manager Shen Peng said that the café mostly used instant coffee powder in the 1980s. The new store has tried hard to set itself apart from the others.

"The menu has five creative drinks named after the area's pastime, such as the bus routes, road names, and slogans," Shen said.
