Jiangsu Province completed the renovation of 110 elderly care centers in rural areas in 2022 as planned amid ongoing efforts to protect and improve people’s livelihoods.
One such center in Nanjing’s Chengqiao Subdistrict, transformed from a smaller nursing home in the provincewide initiative, has become a welcoming home to more seniors, who were happy to make a festive decoration of the site for the Lunar New Year.
The center has all kinds of functional zones for dining, fitness, health management, psychological consultation, reading, and playing chess or cards, thus providing a full range of professional services to the elderly people. To meet healthcare needs, there are one chief physician, a nurse and 10 caregivers working in the center’s clinic, TCM and rehabilitation rooms.
“Everything gets more convenient now, from taking a shower to food and seeing a doctor. We usually play chess. We also put up the Spring Festival couplets and watched the gala together, so it really felt like the Lunar New Year celebration,” 75-year-old Huang Anbao said.
In Xuyi County’s Tianquan Lake Town, such a center covers an area of 20 mu (about 13,300 square meters) and has a floor area of 5,800 square meters with 60 beds, 7 staff members and 44 elderly people living here.
Hou Xueju, 62, said he has personally witnessed the facility’s transition from a bungalow to a nursing home and now a well-equipped care center in the past 30 years.
