Longteng Special Steel Co Ltd, located in Changshu City of Jiangsu Province, has started the operation of its Phase III distributed PV system, setting a domestic record as the building-integrated PV (BIPV) project with the largest span.

The project can generate up to 48.5 million kWh of clean electricity per year, equivalent to reducing carbon emissions by about 38,000 tonnes.

The building, in the shape of a large curved mirror, uses 68,000 monocrystalline solar panels to cover a roof area of 176,000 square meters. It boasts a maximum span of 223.7 meters and a vertical height of 58 meters.

BIPV means solar power generating products or systems seamlessly integrated into the building envelope or components. The BIPV system at Longteng Special Steel can both generate electricity and serve as a shelter, according to Yuan Yan from the company.
