Huai’an City in Jiangsu Province has gone all out to alleviate poverty in villages and accomplish other targets set for realizing the goal of building a moderately well-off society in all aspects this year.
With well-organized new houses and wide, clean cement roads, the Red Home compound is where former residents of the poor Liulaozhuang Village now live, and the village’s transformation can be seen as a role model in marching towards the goal.
Zhu Lin, the village’s Party chief, said the village achieved collective economic income of more than 2.3 million yuan and the per capita income of farmers amounted to 19,800 yuan two years ago.
Zhu said traditional agriculture was scattered and inefficient, and after small plots were connected into larger field for more effective production, people had more time for non-farming activities, such as starting their own businesses or taking other jobs, and then naturally their income was increased.
Similar to the success of Liulaozhuang Village, Lutan Village has also made progress on the road to prosperity. In a couple of years, the village has established ten cooperatives of foxnut, the seeds of which can be used for traditional Chinese medicine, provided new job opportunities for local farmers, and helped 315 people shake off poverty.
The rise of Zhangfuhe Village, which traditionally relied on fishing and suffered from poverty, started from crabs farming that originally started in 1999. Although the crabs farm became larger in size, the main difficulty was to expand sales and reach more consumers. Fortunately, in 2016, the village launched an e-commerce service initiative, offering free training to local farmers to do business online. The efforts have paid off and local family made additional income of 10,000 yuan per year on average. In last year, data showed the village’s e-commerce sales reached 18 million yuan. In addition to the booming crabs business, the village has also embraced the agricultural transformation and industrial optimization campaign, supported by local governments, and developed recreational fishing and tourism by taking full advantage of the beautiful natural environment to further expand the income sources.
