The Standing Committee of Suzhou People’s Congress, the local legislature, and the city government held a press conference on April 28 to announce the establishment of Suzhou Scientists Day on July 10 every year.

Jiang Hua, deputy secretary-general of the city government, said Suzhou was home to many top scorers Zhuangyuan, the title given to the scholar who achieved the highest score in the imperial examination in ancient China, and today is the birthplace of a lot of academicians.

To designate July 10 as Suzhou Scientists Day is a way to increase people’s respect for talents, boost efforts to attract top professionals, and support them to give a full play to their roles.

The first Suzhou Scientists Day will hold the opening ceremony during the Venture Week for International Elites in Suzhou.

The Standing Committee of Suzhou People's Congress reviewed and passed the proposal from the city government to establish the day in honor of scientists during a meeting on April 27.
