Eight departments in Huai’an joined hands to introduce a notice on April 20 to regulate the postal delivery of live animals and clamp down the illegal postal delivery of wildlife and their products, the first in China to implement such strict measures.

To administer the postal delivery of wildlife requires comprehensive efforts at both the supply and demand ends, said Tang Xin, prosecutor of the Huai'an Procuratorate.

The procuratorate has coordinated with the city’s Department of Agricultural and Rural Affairs, the Department of Natural Resources and Planning, the Administration for Market Supervision, police and People's Court to finalize the regulation.

Delivery firms need to rigorously check the inside of mail received for delivery and prevent the protected wildlife and their products from going into the delivery channel. People are banned from sending live animals that are poisonous, aggressive, or of public health hazards through using the postal service. Live animals that are allowed to be delivered should be packaged correctly to ensure safety and have related legal certificates.

The eight departments will also establish information sharing mechanism and coordinate to protect wildlife through joint efforts.
