A national emergency medical team of 37 members from Jiangsu Province left Nanjing City on the afternoon of February 4 to help contain the new pneumonia epidemic in Wuhan, the center of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) outbreak.
The team from Jiangsu People's Hospital, carrying medical protective materials and daily supplies, will work directly under the administration of the national emergency response authorities. The team includes respiratory physicians, intensive care unit specialists, and professionals in fields of pharmacy, testing, radiology and logistics. Among them, half were former members of the National Emergency Rescue Team with good training and strong skills.
The team’s head Chen Xufeng, an expert of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), participated the rescue mission during the Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008. Other members also helped in recuse work after natural disasters such as the Ya’an Earthquake and tornado strike in Yancheng, or took part in cross-province emergency drills, so they are very experienced in clinical treatment.
The team also has members specialized in radiology and nephrology. Xu Xiaoquan, chief physician of the hospital’s Department of Radiology, said some patients in Wuhan need to receive nucleic acid test and take CT scan to evaluate treatment so the Jiangsu team has included a radiologist and two technicians.
