In the run-up to the New Year, Nanjing is set to host 183 performances in December along with 37 exhibitions and 34 new movies hitting the screens.
The Suzhou Kunqu Opera Theatre will stage two creations from its Shi Shuo Xin Yu (A New Account of Tales of the World) series. The original book, compiled by Liu Yiqing (403–444), is a collection of anecdotes, conversations, and observations about Chinese scholars, musicians and artists from the 2nd-4th centuries. The Kunqu series, which began in 2018, features various short stories that have been well-received by the opera community.
The concerts will showcase musicians including Li Jian, Yisa Yu, Alec Su You-peng, Tsai Chin.
Notably, at the end of month, there will be performances of the popular dance drama “Poetic Dance: The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting.” This piece is inspired by “A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains,” a masterpiece by Wang Ximeng during the Song Dynasty (960-1279) and housed at the Palace Museum in Beijing.
Current exhibitions include “An Era in Jinling”, a digitalization of a painting by Qing Dynasty court artist Feng Ning, and the “Immersive Exhibition of Ancient Shu”, inspired by the famous Sanxingdui ruins. Additionally, “From Picasso and Matisse to Andy Warhol - A centennial feast of modernist art” will feature over 100 classic paintings from the modern art movements, including fauvism, cubism, abstract art and pop art.
The more than 30 new films to hit the screen cover various genres, such as realistic, historical and workplace comedies, creating endless entertainment for the audience.
