Jiangsu held the provincial skills competition for tea processing workers at the International Pavilion of the International Horticultural Exposition 2021 in Yizheng City on April 24. The venue also hosted the first competition for handmade Lvyangchun tea, an award-winning tea variety of Yizheng.

Twenty-four craftsmen from local companies were required to heat tea leaves to stop oxidation in two hours and also complete a theory test about tea processing and safety protocols.

Pan Julong, a master with over 30 years of experience in tea processing, said this is a great opportunity to showcase the skills to craft tea.

As the youngest contestant, Zhu Yao, born in 1997, said that he has less experiences compared with the seniors but he was satisfied with his performance in the contest.

Wang Runxian, the head judge, said as most tea is processed by machines nowadays so the competition can help find skilled craftsmen who are important to ensure tea’s top quality.

Tang Mingzhen, chief agronomist of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, said that Luyangchun is one of the top ten famous tea varieties in Jiangsu. The expo provides a good chance for Yizheng to promote its tea brand and expand cooperation.
