A program to raise student’s awareness of the Nanjing Massacre was launched on December 1 with a touring exhibition to be presented in Nanjing’s 30 high schools until December 14.

The program was jointly organized by the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders and the city’s Department of Education.

Zhang Jianjun, curator of the memorial hall, said the exhibition will complement school courses of history and morals education, and inspire students to cherish peace and study harder both for themselves and the country’s prosperity.

Hu Yirui, a teacher at Nanjing No.13 High School, believed that it is very necessary for young students to receive patriotic education.

Japanese troops occupied Nanjing, then China's capital, on Dec. 13, 1937, and began a six-week massacre. Chinese records show that more than 300,000 people -- both unarmed soldiers and civilians -- were brutally murdered and over 20,000 women raped. In 2014, China designated December 13 as "National Memorial Day for Nanjing Massacre Victims."
