Soochow University celebrated its120th anniversary of founding on October 18.
Chen Zhu, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and also chairman of the Central Committee of the Chinese Peasants and Workers Democratic Party, said the university as a hub of elites in many fields has a larger scale, better quality and many key achievements.
Chen hopes Soochow University can become one of the best universities in China with top rankings in teaching faculties, talent education, S&T research and services to the society.
In his congratulation letter, Lou Qinjian, secretary of the CPC Jiangsu Committee, said Soochow University has a long history and great traditions. Over 120 years, the university has made great strides in both education and research, contributing significantly to the social development.
Lou hopes the university can adapt actively to the world changes and domestic requirement of new development pattern, deepen reform, focus on innovation-driven growth, improve education quality to train more talents, and rise into a high-level, research-led university with increased global influence.
Xu Kunlin, member of the standing committee of the CPC Jiangsu Committee and secretary of the CPC Suzhou Committee, said the university has developed into a high-level research university with strong foundation, distinctive features and global reputation, making contribution to the economic and social development of Suzhou, Jiangsu and the whole country.
In seizing opportunities of the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta region and other strategic programs, the CPC Suzhou Committee will fully support the university to become a first-class higher education institution with Chinese characteristics and international influence.
Xu also hopes the university can take advantage of its educational strengths and play more active roles in attracting elements for innovation, education, and improving the city’s development. It’s expected that the university will make new contributions for Suzhou to be at the forefront in the new journey of modernization.
Tsung-Dao Lee, winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1957, also made a video speech to mark the special moment of the university.
