Suzhou Metro’s Line 5, the first driverless subway line in Jiangsu province, started the comprehensive testing on one part of the line on July 31.

A driver operated the train at the initial stage of the test. When the vehicle-ground wireless communication and the trackside positioning system complete debugging, the train will shift to the automated driving model, a process that needs a dozen of systems to finish tests.

Line 5, with a total length of 44.1 kilometers and 34 stations, is expected to open in June 2021. It adopts the highest level of unattended automatic operation, such as stopping, opening or closing the door, and washing all on its own. Meanwhile, the remote control allows direct operation of the train by those in a control center to optimize the performance and safety.
