Total wind and solar energy output amounted to 2.812 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) in Rudong County of Nantong City in the first quarter of the year, 985 million kWh higher than its electricity consumption in the period, according to the county’s Development and Reform Commission. The county is now able to provide the surplus green energy to other regions.
In the Huangshayang water area, about 70 kilometers offshore, the wind farm comprises three parts - H8, H6 and H10- with a total of 265 wind turbines and can generate 9.04 million kWh of electricity a day, enough to meet the power needs of 4,000 families a year. The offshore wind farm has generated more than 400 million kWh of electricity this year.
Rudong has built 13 offshore wind farms since 2018 with the cumulative capacity of 3.8 million kilowatts connected to the grid network. From January to March, the county provided 2.759 billion kWh of wind power to the grid network, which is expected to exceed 15.68 billion kWh this year, nearly twice the total electricity consumption.
Zhang Jun, deputy director of the commission, said wind power stands out for ecological and social benefits. Compared with coal-fired power plants, the county’s wind farm means saving the use of 5.4879 million tons of coal per year and cutting emissions of 18.82 million tons of carbon dioxide and 54,900 tons of sulfur dioxide.
Amid the rise of wind power generation, Rudong has also made innovative practices, such as incorporating fish farm, tourism and agriculture into the PV projects. Tongwei fish farm and PV integration project, the first of its kind in China, represents a new and efficient way of development. In the first quarter, such integrated projects in Rudong contributed 53 million kWh of electricity to the grid network.
