The digital transformation by Nanjing Customs in managing duties levied on personal postal articles has led to greater connivence, efficiency and cost-saving.
Personal postal articles mean the parcels, small packages and printed products delivered by mail. They shall be limited to reasonable quantities for personal use. Customs shall levy import duties on the portion of articles whose value exceeds the duty-free limit.
Thanks to the paperless upgrading, Suzhou resident Ms. Jiang said it takes seconds for her to get the duty payment record by scanning a QR code on the package sent from abroad.
For Su Hongwei, who works with Suzhou branch of China Post, the digital transformation means an increased efficiency of sorting the parcels and packages. He said the biggest change is that he no longer needs to look for an item and then paste the duty payment bill on it.
One month after the reform, customs stationed at Suzhou branch is able to handle 1,300 postal articles a day, double the capacity in the past. The time to complete the custom clearance of postal articles was reduced by 75%, and the consumables cost saved due to the use of paperless bills totaled 40,000 yuan a month.
