Gulou District in Nanjing City has made it on to the list of counties (county-level cities and districts) nominated for a pilot program of rooftop solar projects by the National Energy Administration.

Gulou plans to install solar panels on the roofs of governmental buildings, hospitals, schools, plants and residential buildings in 120 neighborhoods under the administration of 13 sub-districts. With an investment of 250 million yuan, the project is expected to generate 45 million kilowatts per year.

Compared with thermal power generation, this project is equivalent to saving 14,000 tonnes of standard coal and cutting the emissions of 36,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, 5.6 tonnes of sulfur dioxide, 8 tonnes nitrogen oxides and 1.5 tonnes of dust.

Zhao Hanqing, deputy director of the Development and Reform Commission of Gulou District, said that all the installation and maintenance costs will be borne by the project developer, which will enter into an energy management agreement with the property owner.

Property owner as well as residents in a building where rooftop solar panels are installed have the priority to use the electricity generated, and then the unused power will be connected to the grid.
