The Government Work Report stated, “We will increase the supply of quality medical resources, channel them toward the community level, and ensure a more balanced distribution among regions. We will implement projects to strengthen the foundations of medical and health care. “ Jiangsu deputies to the 14th National People's Congress (NPC) and others in the industry have shared their views on promoting easier access to high-quality medical resources at the grassroots healthcare institutions.
Ren Weihua, director of the rheumatology department at the Northern Jiangsu People’s Hospital, emphasized two approaches, policy measures and diverse forms of training, to enhance the capabilities of doctors providing primary care. For example, addressing the lack of rheumatology specialists at such institutions, the hospital led the establishment of a rheumatology alliance in 2023. It now includes 43 member units from cities within the province, such as Taizhou and Yangzhou, as well as from Xinjiang, Shaanxi, and Guizhou. The association’s main tasks include training grassroots doctors and significantly reducing the time and costs for people seeking medical treatment.
Shu Yiping, Party chief of Jiangsu Cancer Hospital, stated that the provincial hospital has tailored a plan to support the local cancer hospital in Huai’an City. This plan includes dispatching core technical members to assist with the construction of key departments and sending clinical and management experts to guide capacity building. This initiative helps local patients seek treatment without leaving their hometowns and also attracts patients from other regions to benefit from the improved services. Currently, the province’s 17 county-level hospitals, including those in Zhangjiagang, Liyang, Sheyang and Lianshui, have initiated the construction of cancer prevention and treatment centers.
