The opening ceremony of the Jiangsu Ice and Snow Carnival took place at the Longfenggu Ski Venue in Changzhou City on January 15.
A signature winter sports program for mass participation in the province, the 6th annual carnival will run until February 10. The opening ceremony, held both online and onsite, featured shows by professional athletes as well as their interactions with enthusiasts of ice and snow sports.
The event will offer chances to try skiing or curling as well as participate in recreational programs including snowball fight and snowman-making. Online activities such as a quiz will also improve the knowledge of ice and snow sports.
Participants need to make reservation first and also comply with COVID-19 restriction measures at the venue. Changzhou citizen Liu Lei brought his 4-year-old daughter to the site for the first time, saying the child had a great time in playing for more than an hour.
As the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics draws near, the province has built 45 ice and snow venues with a total area of 553,200 square meters.
Jiangsu has encouraged the private investment into sectors including ice and snow-making facilities. Meanwhile, the Jiangsu Provincial Sports Bureau has also guided local authorities to host festivals, ski racings for children and parents, and winter camps. The province has also issued vouchers for four consecutive years to stimulate spending for the ice and snow programs.
