China’s first regularly operated 5G self-driving bus in Suzhou City has provided service to 11,000 passengers and run over a length totaling 15,000 kilometers nearly six months after its opening.
Autonomous driving start-up QCraft launched the project at Suzhou High-Speed Rail New Town on October 21 last year, the first of its kind in China.
The first route of 3.4 kilometers long has five stops along the way, connecting a commercial complex, office buildings, hotels and large event venues. Its operation increased from 4 hours a day to 6.5 hours in February. Then two more routes, at 4.6 and 7.3 kilometers long respectively, were also added to link with more shopping centers, office areas and residential communities by March.
To comply with the domestic requirements of unmanned commercial vehicles, the driver in the driver's seat has become a safety officer to ensure the normal operation of the vehicle. Passengers can apply for free monthly or single trips through WeChat.
This year, Suzhou High-Speed Rail New Town will open the fourth 5G unmanned bus line, thus covering an area of 9.8 square kilometers.
