A milestone was reached in the construction of China’s first bridge that integrates an expressway, an ordinary highway and an inter-city railway on the Yangtze River on March 13.

The bridge links Changzhou and Taizhou, two cities in east China's Jiangsu Province. The massive caisson for No. 5 pier, the pier to hold the bridge’s main tower, completed the main work after 38 days of continuous construction.

The structure made of steel, which is sunk into position, is 72 meters high and the bottom surface is equivalent to 13 basketball court, the world’s largest steel caisson, according to Wu Qihe, deputy head of the project from CCCC Second Harbor Engineering Company. It was first made in a shipyard in September 2019 and then transported in pieces and installed at the site after elaborate efforts.

With a main span of 1,176 meters, the bridge is set to have the largest span for a cable-stayed bridge in the world. Construction started on January 9, 2019 and is expected to complete in five and a half years. It can shorten the distance between the two cities by 30 minutes.
