Now the city of Suzhou is trying to rejuvenate the age-old art form by transforming "Peony Pavilion's" love story into a landscape drama in a Suzhou garden.To display the original charm of the opera, there is no sound equipment. This is putting the performers' vocal ability to the test.[Detail]

The cross-Strait Kunqu opera show was staged on Oct 11 at the Red House Theater of the Jiangning Weaving Museum in Nanjing, capital of east China’s Jiangsu province.

Later,several Anhui Opera troupes came to perform in Beijing,and this art form evolved into the Peking Opera which later became dominant 。
Some performers left the imperial court and princes'mansions to give shows in central Hebei Province.
In the mid-1950s several Kunqu theatrical festivals were held in Shanghai and Beijing,and in 1956,the Guofeng Kunqu Troupe from Jiangsu performed"Fifteen Strings of Copper Coins"in Beijing.
Kunqu dance is divided into two categories.
June 2001 marked the 44th anniversary of the founding of the Northern Kunqu Theater in Beijing.

Acappella Kunqu Opera Peach Blossom Fan 1699 was staged in Beijing and Tianjin from Dec 1 to 3. The opera was sponsored by Jiangsu Provincial Department of Culture and co-produced by Central Conservatory of Music and Jiangsu Performing Arts Group.[Detail]
The Peony Pavilion, a masterpiece of Chinese Kunqu opera from the 16th century, proved its durability by thrilling New Yorkers in a fresh production directed by Academy Award-winning composer Tan Dun.

Chinese-American writer Kenneth Hsien-yung Pai is better known for his work promoting Kunqu Opera than for his writing these days. It is not surprising because he has devoted most of his time to Kunqu Opera since he began to work with the Suzhou Kunqu Opera Theater to produce the "youth version" of Peony Pavilion in 2003.[Detail]
China's Kunqu Opera was recently performed for the first time at the Shaw Theater of London - and to great acclaim. The theater, named after Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw, hosted two performances of the genre as part of Beijing Culture Week in London. The author of the Kunqu play,Two Belles in Love performed at Beijing's Poly Theatre from May 11 to 14,is Qing Dynasty(1644-1911)playwright Li Yu.

The play has won both applause and criticism.
The play tells the love story of Du Liniang and Liu Mengmei.
Méi was born in Taizhou in east China's Jiangsu Province in 1894 to a family of Beijing Opera and Kunqu performers.
But younger people–both as performers as well as in the audience--need to be drawn under the Kunqu spell to renew its vitality.
It also holds Kunqu classes taught by famous Kunqu performers which are open to the general public.

Famous playwright Pai Hsien recreated a vernal version of the story for young people to feel the allure of Kunqu 。
The new version of The Peony Pavilion concentrates on love and youth closer to the young generation.
College students are craving for affiliation to their national culture which touches their heart.
It strikes a sympathetic chord when their emotions and thoughts correspond with the characters in the classic stories 。
