Zhou Yan, a deputy to the Jiangsu Provincial People’s Congress and Party chief of Nanjian neighborhood in Wuxi City, has been devoted to grassroots work for 12 years, helping safeguard the interest of the masses and promoting their wellbeing.
Responding to concerns about elderly care, Zhou has made frequent home visits to aged residents, understanding their life, health, worries and expectations. She has conducted research in elderly care service stations, and explored a model integrating social workers, volunteers and the Internet. This model provides meals, haircuts, companionship services for seniors.
In addition, she initiated a self-governing mutual-assistance team, supporting solitary elderly individuals, and engaged delivery workers to assist bed-ridden seniors with medication purchases. Under her leadership, the neighborhood now has over 150 volunteers who have provided 11,000 instances of assistances. Furthermore, Nanjian has established 11 service teams, forming a network of 1,100 people and over 30 organizations to enhance community governance.
