The Good Earth Pearl, a stunning dance spectacle inspired by Pulitzer Prize-winner Pearl S. Buck, will take to the stage at the Jiangsu Centre for the Performing Arts on the evening of June 9.
Born in the US but raised in China, Pearl considers China her hometown. She lived and worked in Zhenjiang and Nanjing of Jiangsu Province, Lushan in Jiangxi Province, and Suzhou of Anhui Province for nearly 40 years, including 18 years in her early life in the city of Zhenjiang. Pearl devoted her life to promoting the communication and exchange between the two countries. Her novel The Good Earth portrays China's countryside and farmers, and she also won the Nobel Prize in literature.
In 2015, Pearl: Spring River Flower Moon Night, a full-scale Broadway style production, had its world premiere at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. This multimedia explosion of light, sound and movement is a masterpiece by director-choreographer Daniel Ezralow, also the choreographer of the Sochi Olympics Opening Ceremonies. Notable members of the crew included Japanese composer Jun Miyake and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The Chinese and foreign coproduction has toured the world with over 100 performances.
"The new show can be considered the 2.0 version of Pearl: Spring River Flower Moon Night," said Wu Linna, vice president of Zhenjiang Art Theatre.
The performance lineup includes nearly 50 top dance artists from China and abroad. Overcoming the language difficulties, they have worked closely during rehearsals to celebrate the life of Pearl in five symbolic stages - Spring, River, Flower, Moon, Night – based on the famous poem written by Zhang Ruoxu in the Tang Dynasty (618-907), about the passing of human existence.
The choreography combines multiple elements and the audience can see both typical Western modern dance and traditional Tai Chi or folk-dance styles, according to the choreographer.
