As temperatures gradually rise since March 12, many regions in Jiangsu have begun the first harvesting of spring tea.
The spring tea picking was about 5-7 days earlier than last year. The harvesting resumed after March 26 after a suspension for several days due to cold front from March 22 to 25.
The harvesting of Biluochun tea, a famous green tea, started officially in the Dongting Mountain region on March 12 and has now entered into the middle-to-late stages. Picking of the new Biluochun cultivar “Chawan 3” also started gradually.
Liyang is a well-known production area of Baicha, or white tea, with zaonaibai the first cultivar harvested, but the main harvesting period will be late March and early April.
In Yizheng, Zhongcha 108 is the tea cultivar first harvested since March 15, and other varieties like Huangjinya will soon start picking.
The change in domestic COVID-19 response policy means tea pickers are able to work as usual in Jiangsu and tea prices have remained basically stable. However, due to the high temperatures and drought in 2022, the spring tea this year generally had slower growth and tea buds was not as full as last year while the yield will be significantly reduced.
