Wufengshan Yangtze River Bridge, China's first road-rail suspension bridge, will open the expressway section before July 1, a milestone of applying the next-generation road building technologies.

A project evaluation organized by China Highway and Transportation Society found the expressway’s construction has reached the international leading level.

To make the bridge a role model of modern transport, the Jiangsu Provincial Transport Construction Department and Jiangsu Communications Holding have cooperated closely with all sides to put into practice top technologies, such as 5G, BIM, Big Data, Internet of Things and cloud computing. This has led to the vehicle-road coronation and smart road management to ensure the safety, sustainability, and pleasant driving experience. This effort represents a sophisticated integration of technology and expressway construction in China, earning the project the name of “future expressway”.

The evaluation committee inspected the application of smart technologies in over 20 scenarios and listened to report of achievements, such as the driving guide on foggy days, an automated de-icing system and traffic jam response.

Building the bridge has led to 5 patents, 6 software copyrights, 15 papers, and the forming of 6 standards. It’s expected the practices in building the bridge will be applied in more projects and bring higher social benefits.

The bridge integrates an eight-lane expressway on the upper deck and a high-speed railway on the lower deck. The railway opened in last December.
