Wang Qiujiao (R) measures head circumference for a baby while paying a home visit in Zhumei Village, Hezhou City of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, May 11, 2021. Wang Qiujiao, 74 years old and a member of the Communist Party of China, has been a village doctor in Zhumei Village for 48 years. Zhumei Village, located in remote mountainous area, was formerly isolated from the outside world due to the poor transportation. Doctors in the village then were scarce and people had to walk to the adjacent city to see a doctor. Most villagers chose not to see a doctor until their desease became severe. Knowing well the predicament of local villagers, Wang returned to her hometown as a village doctor after graduation in 1973. She often walked to see the patients while carrying her medical box, sometimes taking more than one hour on the way. In 2015, she became a signed family doctor for local villagers. Besides regular work, she does physical examination regularly for the elderly and sets up health data for villagers. Nowadays, her son works as a village doctor too, willing to safeguard the health of local villagers together with his mother. (Xinhua/Cao Yiming)
