Zhang Fuyuan discusses follow-up plan of Hualong One project with team members in Chengdu, southwest China's Sichuan Province, Feb. 4, 2021. China's first nuclear power unit using Hualong One, a domestically-designed third-generation nuclear reactor, entered commercial operation on Jan. 30, 2021. Zhang Fuyuan, 66, is the chief designer of Hualong One ZH-65 steam generator. After five years of continuous research, design, modification and verification test, Zhang Fuyuan led his team to complete the technology research for independent design of ZH-65 steam generator in 2015. The ZH-65 steam generator is about 21 meters high, 4.6 meters in maximal width, weighing 365 tonnes. It was dubbed by designers "Da Bai". The steam generator is among the 411 core components domesticated for Hualong One. While they were mostly imported from countries like France and the United States before 2007, China's first patented model was created within 27 months by a team led by Zhang and other experts from the Nuclear Power Institute of China. Up to now, with the design drawings approved and signed by Zhang Fuyuan, 76 sets of steam generators have been manufactured. Out of these, 60 sets have been put into use or installed, while 16 are in the making. (Xinhua/Liu Kun)
