Chen Xin, a student of Nanjing Polytechnic Institute, has put his sign language skills to good use by explaining the highly infectious Delta variant of the novel coronavirus in a video.

Sign language is important to many deaf people's ability to learn, communicate and participate in society. Chen said it’s hard for some deaf people to understand science of the Delta strain just from words and sign language can get them better prepared for the pandemic.

In his second year of high school in 2017, Chen had a deaf friend and then became interested in learning sign language. He honed the skills with students at the Nanjing Special Education Teachers' College and also made many new friends there, from whom Chen has a better understanding of this disadvantaged group.

Later, with the support of his parents, Chen obtained the certificate for sign language interpreter. Seeing the group’s need for correct knowledge and skills for COVID-19 response, Chen then began to make the video.

After publishing his video, Chen was quickly joined by over ten friends and supporters to continue providing correct information to the deaf people. He also hopes more people can learn sign language and make life easier for the deaf people.
