The China Grand Canal Museum in Yangzhou will open an exhibition of cultural relics from the Potala Palace on February 6.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Potala Palace’s inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The complex is the largest palace in Xizang Autonomous Region, representing a precious part of the intangible cultural heritage of the nation.
The exhibition will showcase 101 sets of cultural relics with 169 items, such as thangka paintings and sculptures. Remarkably, one-third of the relics are being displayed for the first time.
The country has attached great importance to the protection of the ancient architectural complex. The first phase of renovation dated back to 1989, with a total cost of 53 million yuan. The second phase from 2002 to 2009 involved a total investment of 179.3 million yuan, marking a milestone in cultural heritage protection. The exhibition will also show photos documenting these two renovations and the outcomes as well as preservation of ancient books.
