To celebrate the New Year, thousands of people participated in a joyful walk event along the Grand Canal in Suzhou on January 1.

The journey started at the foot of the Lion Mountain and followed the watercourse in Suzhou New District, one of China’s first national high-tech zones. The event featured activities associated with the canal’s cultural heritage, such as spring couplets-writing by Chinese calligraphy masters.

The Bank of China’s Suzhou Branch also distributed red packets of digital yuan to stimulate the cultural and tourism market.

Initiated by the Xinhua Daily Media Group in 2018, the walk event has been held three times across Jiangsu’s eight cities along the ancient canal, a UNESCO world heritage site.

The Lion Mountain is bordered by the city’s old town to the east and an emerging business district to the west, symbolizing a blend of tradition and modernity with the canal at its heart.

The Suzhou New District, encompassing 28 kilometers of the canal, made great strides in 2023. It signed and hosted 149 new projects, each involving an investment of over 100 million yuan, and had eight major projects recognized at the provincial level. Five companies from the district went public, and the Suzhou Campus of Nanjing University welcomed its first faculties and students. In addition, Suzhou embroidery, Suzhou Museum West and Suzhou Chinese Orchestra all played active roles in preserving and promoting the Jiangnan culture.
