348 Chinese operas honored at Kunshan's museum

The museum is named as baixi (100 operas) in honor of Kunqu Opera, which is one of the oldest forms of Chinese opera originated in Kunshan.

Covering a total floor area of about 17,000 square meters, the multifunctional facility comprises of an exhibition hall as well as spaces dedicated to cultural creation. It highlights the history, development and characteristics of operas from across the country.

To celebrate its opening, the museum also features an exhibition of more than 100 cultural relics related to the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) court theatre, which is also a collection from the Palace Museum in Beijing, including scripts, costumes and props.

Noting that opera is a form of traditional culture, the museum’s curator Fei Yiming said many theater troupes have donated exhibits of unique value, enriching the museum’s collection and helping visitors learn about the origins and development of opera through different eras.
