Ahead of Chinese New Year, Rupesh Regmi, a doctorate from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA), decided to learn a traditional Chinese dish during the festival. Hongshaorou,or red-cooked pork, is Rupesh’s favorite food, which has bright red color and was delicious and auspicious in Chinese culture for prosperity.
Coming to China in 2006, Rupesh has many cherished memories about the festival. He once celebrated Chinese New Year with his Chinese friend’s family. “There were so many dishes on the table, and I didn’t even know which one to start with.” Rupesh’s wife also studied in China for a year, and the couple agreed to let their future kids learn Chinese and Chinese culture, “so that they can understand our experience.”
When Rupesh first came to China, he was only 17 or 18 years old. In an era when social media just emerged, Rupesh had come across so many challenges such as opening a bank account or finding the subway station. “Luckily I got many help from local people. I know they were in middle of something, but they can always drop what they were doing to help me.” Rupesh said he love the kind and helpful people in Nanjing.
After graduating from college, Rupesh decided to pursue his master degree in NUAA, where he found a part-time job to assist international students and run the university’s social media account. During that period of six to seven years, over 3000 international students from the world applied for proper universities and majors under his help. Based on his own experience, he set up the website WiseAdmit last year for students across the world who wants to study abroad. “I want students outside of China to know that there are also many elite universities in China, especially for those from underdeveloped countries. The opportunities are good, and also many choices.” Equipped with certain AI technology, the website has analyzed the scoring system of over 220 universities in the world. Students can get an overall score and qualified matches for free after filling in their information.
With more and more countries joining China’s Belt and Road Initiative, Chinese enterprises are investing heavily in other countries. Local employees with some Chinese background have wide opportunities to build a decent life themselves while contributing to the development of their country.
His website has already attracted many viewers. Rupesh hopes they can help at least 300 student by the end of 2023.
