Foreign friends marvel at Jiangsu's super transportation projects
(Photo by Zhang Yun) About 20 foreign guests from 11 countries, including the US, Germany, Brazil, Russia, and Morocco, visited the construction sites of the Haimen-Taicang Yangtze River Tunnel and the expansion project of the Shanghai-Wuhan Expressway (Taicang-Changzhou section) from June 26 to 27. Participants in the Super Project Open Day included both international students and expats living in China for decades. German national Udo Looser, who has lived in China for nearly 25 years, remarked, "before 2000, there was no bridge at the south of the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge." Showing photos of the ferry crossing the river from Haimen over 20 years ago, Udo expressed amazement at the dramatic transportation development in Jiangsu’s river-crossing infrastructure. The 135-kilometer Shanghai-Wuhan Expressway expansion (Taicang-Changzhou) connects seven Yangtze River crossings, linking some of China’s most dynamic county-level economies in the Yangtze River Delta. "Besides being deeply impressed by these mega-projects, I was truly moved by the workers on site," said Chilean student Francisco. "We were drenched with sweat after just an hour or two of touring, yet countless workers labor day after day like this, all to make this city a better place and for their people to have a better life." Subsequent events will include observation tours to other major project sites, offering "Youth Witness Ambassadors" opportunities to learn firsthand at these super construction zones.
