Jiangsu's bird and power line protection goes global for first time

State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Co., Ltd. has successfully introduced its experience in providing dual protection for both the power grid and avian habitats to Brazil, according to State Grid on April 1.

A team from the Jiangsu company guided the installation of protection barriers at transmission towers for Brazilian power company CPFL Energia in Rio Grande do Sul. This marked the first successful international application of the "bird + line protection" strategy, pioneered by the Jiangsu company since 2017.

Jiangsu has seen an improvement in ecological environments, leading to a thriving population of migratory birds that also pose a threat to power supply stability. The company has developed epoxy resin barriers that significantly reduce the likelihood of line faults caused by rare birds such as the Oriental stork. This practice has been showcased multiple times on international stages, attracting attention from overseas counterparts.

CPFL Energia members visited Yangzhou City, Jiangsu, twice in 2018 and 2024 to inspect grid safety and protection management. Gustavo, operations manager at CPFL Energia, said that China has extensive experience in electrical equipment and technology and the cooperation will enhance the safety and environmental standards of Brazil's power grid.

Following the installation, teams from the two countries plan to summarize the cooperation and draft international technical standards. They will also explore partnership in areas such as drone inspections and line monitoring. This initiative aims to promote the standardized practices in grid safety and biodiversity protection among countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative.
