Xinghua recognized as national renowned historical and cultural city

Xinghua has been approved as a national renowned historical and cultural city, bringing Jiangsu’s total to 14 and placing the province first in the country.
Xinghua is the 143rd national renowned historical and cultural city recognized by the State Council and the 4th county-level city in Jiangsu to receive this title.
Gao Chunli, Party chief of the Xinghua Tourism Service Center and head of the city’s application office for the title, said that Xinghua is known as the "water town of central Jiangsu" and the "hinterland of the Jianghuai region". It boasts abundant cultural relics, clusters of historical architecture, distinctive traditional villages, and incredible intangible cultural heritage, all of which contributed to the city’s success in winning the recognition.

Notably, the Caoyangang ruins in Xinghua, dating back 7,200–6,900 years, is currently the earliest known Neolithic site in the Jianghuai region. As early as 2014, the Xinghua Duotian irrigation and drainage system was recognized by the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System program of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). In 2022, it was also designated as part of the 9th batch of World Heritage Irrigation Sites by the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID).

With 2,000 years of human history, Xinghua is home to two historical and cultural districts, one Chinese historical and cultural town, 23 traditional villages, 110 cultural heritage protection sites, 119 immovable cultural relics, 110 historical buildings and   124 intangible cultural heritage items.
