Jiangsu’s energy transformation cases highlighted at COP29

The State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Company Ltd released a collection of sustainable development cases at the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) on November 20. 

Titled "Accelerating Energy Transformation and Contributing to Climate Action", the collection showcases best practices in promoting low-carbon transformation and sustainable development in the province. The company was also the only one from China’s national power grid system to present achievements at the UN climate change conference in Baku, Azerbaijan from November 11 to 22. 

Despite covering just 1% of China's land area, Jiangsu supports over 6% of the national population and contributes more than 10% of the country’s GDP. As a major energy-consuming province, Jiangsu has taken a series of measures to enhance energy efficiency, promote green development, and ensure energy security. 

In Nanjing, the Yangtze River is utilized as a natural cooling source through heat pump technology to provide cooling and heating for urban buildings. This approach significantly reduces energy consumption and carbon emissions while driving the growth of green buildings in riverside cities. Additionally, the local power company supports the adoption of wind and solar energy for the cement industry, promoting energy conservation. 

In Suzhou, the focus has been on expanding smart agriculture technologies and incorporating new energy applications to support circular agriculture. These initiatives have enabled the efficient utilization of agricultural waste, reducing carbon emissions. Furthermore, digital tools have also been implemented to precisely monitor carbon emissions during enterprise production processes. 

Wuxi has prioritized building a new type of power system, exploring interactions between electric vehicles and the grid. This initiative facilitates the integration of renewable energy and delivers mutual benefits. At inland ports, traditional diesel generators have been replaced with shore power facilities, which provide clean electricity for ships. These efforts have driven the green transformation of inland waterway transportation. 

In Changzhou, the emphasis has been on optimizing microgrid operations and control technologies to enhance the overall efficiency and reliability of the local energy system. 

As a coastal city, Lianyungang has developed smart microgrids and supplied renewable energy to island regions, fostering green development and transition to a low-carbon economy in these areas.
