WAITRO Summit 2024 in Nanjing promotes innovation for bigger impact
The World Association of Industrial and Technological Research Organizations (WAITRO) and the Jiangsu Industrial Technology Research Institute (JITRI) co-hosted the WAITRO Summit 2024 in Nanjing from November 13 to 15.
Over 200 guests from more than 30 countries and regions, including the USA, Germany and Denmark, discussed how to how to convert innovations into broader impacts, expand the reach of ideas beyond local markets, facilitate exchange between innovators.
Founded in 1970 under the auspices of the United Nations, WAITRO brings together science, technology and innovation stakeholders on an international scale and provides a mechanism for its members and partners to connect and share their contributions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Currently, the association has over 180 members from more than 70 countries. JITRI, a member of WAITRO, serves as the Secretariat for the 2023-2026 term.
In an interview, WAITRO President Hasan Mandal, also President of TÜBİTAK in Turkey, stated that humanity faces challenges across social, economic, and environmental aspects. He emphasized that the solutions are found through cooperation and innovation with a far-reaching impact. He hoped that the meeting would strengthen both talent development and technological innovation towards sustainable development.
Deodat Maharaj, Managing Director of the UN Technology Bank for Least Developed Countries, remarked that China has consistently supported the least developed nations by providing crucial technological supports to improve the lives of local people. "I am very pleased to participate in this summit and hope that more countries will introduce advanced technologies in the least developed countries."
