Historic Memorial Hall at Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum in restoration

The Memorial Hall, a key structure within the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum in Nanjing, is undergoing restoration from October 21 to January 20, 2025, with partial closures and protective barriers in place during this period.

Constructed in 1929, the mausoleum is one of China’s first national key protected heritage sites. It has been recognized as a landmark of 20th-century Chinese architecture, a national patriotism education base, and a cross-Strait cultural exchange site.

The Memorial Hall combines Chinese and Western architectural styles, featuring exterior walls of Hong Kong granite and a traditional Chinese double-eave Xieshan roof covered in blue glazed tiles. At the center of the hall is a marble sculpture of Sun Yat-sen seated, created by renowned French artist Paul Landowski.

The Memorial Hall has faced issues such as component aging, roof leaks, and inadequate drainage. To maintain visual continuity, a 600-square-meter painting resembling the building's façade has been installed on the construction barrier.

Yu Kun from the Cultural Relics Department of the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum Administration stated that the restoration will strictly adhere to laws and regulations, such as the principles of “not changing the original state of the relic” and “minimal intervention.” The primary goal is to preserve the historical integrity and core values of the site.

During the restoration, the hall will remain open to visitors. Efforts will be made to ensure project safety and quality, with the aim of completing the restoration on schedule and a swift return to regular public visits.
