Located southwest of Baodai Bridge, part of the Grand Canal - a UNESCO world heritage - in Wuzhong District of Suzhou City, the Museum of Wu has gained widespread recognition since its opening in June 2020.

This year, the museum successfully obtained the status of a national first-class museum. It also became one of three winners of the prestigious “2024 Most Innovative Museum in China” award, issued by the Chinese Museum Association.

The museum features a simple but elegant exterior that incorporates traditional Chinese aesthetics. Its design draws inspiration from the streets and courtyards of Suzhou. When viewed from above, the arrangement of the various units resembles the Chinese character 'Wu'.

Curator Chen Zenglu said the museum has focused on the cultural heritage of Wuzhong, the scenic Taihu Lake, and the poetic Jiangnan region as the guiding themes to organize its exhibitions, educational programs, and public services.

In June 2021, the museum introduced original plays based on its collections. It has also organized poetry gatherings, drama and dance workshops, and script readings.

“Small and medium-sized museums need to find their own paths. We must make our own voices heard, express our ideas, and promote the diversified development of the cultural relics sector,” said Chen.
