Peking and Kunqu opera elites gather in Nanjing for fifth Zijin art festival

The fifth Zijin Peking Opera and Kunqu Opera Elites Art Festival opened at the Jiangsu Zijin Grand Theatre in Nanjing on October 15. 

The festival will feature 27 performances by 21 troupes and school teams from across the country over the course of more than one month. This year’s edition represents a comprehensive upgrade in both content and format, with the strongest lineup of renowned artists to date. 

Highlights include a joint performance of The Peony Pavilion by Kunqu Opera artists from Jiangsu and Shanghai. Additionally, two famous Peaking Opera plays, Consort Mei from the Cheng School and Guifei Intoxicated from the Mei School, will share the stage for the first time. Meanwhile, troupe at the provincial, city and county levels will also perform Kunqu Opera or Peking Opera programs during the festival. 

The festival will also include a series of activities such as lectures, meet-and-greets, online shows and film screenings. Notably, an elaborately designed space will integrate exhibition of creative cultural products, intangible cultural heritage items, as well as coffee and dining options, facilitating the cultural exchange and shopping.
