Jiangsu’s civil aviation in steady recovery amid rising market needs

From January to July, passenger throughput at nine airports in Jiangsu surpassed 31.68 million, marking a year-on-year growth of 120%. In July alone, these airports served 5.644 million passengers and 53,000 tonnes of cargo, up 80% and 2.6% compared to last year, and 5.2% and 1.2% compared to 2019, respectively.

The airports have accelerated efforts to reopen routes this year and achieved smooth progress in the construction and renovation projects at Sunan Shuofang International Airport, Huai'an Lianshui International Airport, and Xuzhou Guanyin International Airport.

Airlines increased flights to popular destinations in July to meet the summer travel demands of student and families. With the economic recovery and measures to stabilize foreign trade and investment, international air cargo volume in July rose by 58.4% year-on-year and 46.2% than in June.

Among the developments, three all-cargo routes linking Nanjing, Wuxi and Nantong cities in Jiangsu Province with Ezhou Huahu Airport in Hubei Province were launched on August 15. Ezhou Huahu Airport, the first aviation logistics port in Asia and fourth in the world, is expected to play an important role in enhancing the comprehensive capacity of domestic air cargo services.

Changzhou Benniu International Airport has expanded its cargo transport network by establishing an all-cargo route with Beijing. The airport has worked with large-scale logistics and transportation enterprises to extend its network to cover Shanghai in the east, northern Zhejiang area in the south, Anhui in the west, and three cities in the north - Yangzhou, Taizhou and Nantong.

The domestic economy is improving steadily, and demand for both passenger and cargo air transport continues to grow for various reasons, not just family visits and holiday travel, said Li Feng, a researcher of the Jiangsu Provincial Academy of Social Sciences.

According to the province’s Department of Transport, more efforts will be made to resume or add regional and international flights, boost the cargo transport capacity, and expedite projects like Phase III of Nanjing Lukou International Airport and the preliminary work for a new airport in Nantong.
