The book shows
a sorrowful living prospect of a poor and unenlighted village using from a
realistic view. It indicates that the prevailing of feudal thoughts is closely
linked with poverty. Both poor in material and virtue is the root of tragedy. At
the same time the book shows the sprouting of new generation in socialist
China.
With rich ethnic features, the
writer Zhang Xuan threw away the time and space sequence in psychological
description and portrayed the environment and characters with typical features;
thus profoundly and powerfully represented the zigzag way Chinese countryside
had trudged from the end of 1950s to 1970s. Therefore the author told people
that developing economy is the only way to uproot feudalism and set up a new
spiritual civilization.
The book romances some dramatic
plots which are intensely contrasted, and which include shocking history. These
broaden the theme of the book.
