China Sea-salt Museum is the only specialty museum in China that presents Chinese sea-salt history and civilization. It is located in Yancheng City, Jiangsu Province between Chuanchang River, a famous ancient manmade river for salt delivery, and Fangong Dike, a famous sea wall in Song Dynasty. It occupies a floor space of 60,000 square meters with its body building of 18,000 square meters.

It was designed by Mr Cheng Taining, an academician of Chinese academy of engineering and one of the winners of the highest award of Chinese architecture designLiang Sicheng Award. Its title was inscribed by Shen Peng, a famous calligrapher.

China Sea-salt Museum was completed and thrown open to the public in November 2008. Its display consists of five parts: Preface, Part One (Mans Companion), Part Two (Salt History), Part Three( Odes to Salt-Makers), Part Four (Salt Cities). The purpose is to collect, protect and research historical materials of sea-salt culture and to demonstrate Chinese sea-salt civilization in all dimensions and multiple angles.

Yancheng is a city with a history of more than 2000 years and its setting up, name and prosperity are all attributed to salt. It is the source of sea-salt culture along the lower reaches of Huaihe River and the coast of the Yellow Sea. The history of Yancheng is a miniature of the history of Chinese sea-salt. The foundation of China Sea-salt Museum lays out how the history of sea-salt development has been affecting all aspects of the particular region including Yancheng.
