Yunlong Mountain,which is 3 km long and is composed of nine sections of mountain tops,derives its name from wandering dragon and wreathing cloud and mist. In 1984 archaeologists had discovered the clay figures of warriors and horses from seven locations of the Lion Hill area (Shizi Mountain). These warriors and horses were buried under the Lion Pond.Archaeologists believe that those warriors and horses were buried underground as funeral objects with the deceased King of Chu State upon completion of the tomb.Local governments have spent millions in archaeological excavations and an underwater warrior exhibition museum has been established on the original location where the warriors and horses were found.[Detail]

This monument area,including its facilities,was established in 1960 and opened to the public in 1965 to commemorate this battle which occurred during the modern Chinese civil war when People s Liberation Army led by the Chinese Communist Party combated the army of the Chinese Nationalist Party-Guomindang 。 There were totally about 1.4 millions of troops engaged in the battle from both sides and more than a hundreds of thousands died in the fighting.
