Professor David S G Goodman, Vice President Academic at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), has personally witnessed the dramatic progress amid China’s reform and opening up in the past four decades.

After several career changes, Prof Goodman has decided to devote himself to education and research at the university, a partnership between Xi'an Jiaotong University and the University of Liverpool at Suzhou Dushu Lake Higher Education Town.

He received education at the London School of Oriental and African Studies, with a major in Chinese language and Chinese politics. In 1978, he went to study economics at Peking University, which allowed him to see the launch of China’s reform and opening up as well as the development in the following years.

In order to obtain first-hand materials, Prof Goodman travelled all over China. However, things were not always easy for him 40 years ago since China was still closed then and foreigners needed a special travel permit. He said, at that time, foreigners needed permission from the public security department and the work unit before travelling while the tickets must be booked in advance.

As Chinese society becomes more open, foreigners face less travel restrictions in China. The well-developed rail and air transportation networks greatly facilitate people's travel, which is one of the biggest achievements in China's 40 years of reform and opening up in the view of Prof Goodman.

A famous China studies expert, he once taught at world-renowned institutions, such as the University of Sydney and the University of Newcastle and also published many books about China. The constant changes and development in China since the reform and opening up have provided new materials for Prof Goodman’s researches. He said China has given him a lot and he hopes to give back to China. Editor:Amanda
