Seo Dae Won, Nanjing chief representative of Daejeon Economic and Trade Relations Revitalization Institute, became one of the 18 foreigners to win the title of Friendly Ambassador of Jiangsu Province at the third meeting of the sixth council of Jiangsu People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries on July 10, 2018.

In an interview with Xinhua Daily, he shared his special bond with Nanjing, saying he’s grateful to Jiangsu for recognizing his efforts with the award and the six years in the province have brought him many friends but much more than friendship.

Long-term friendship between two sides

In 1994, Daejeon of South Korea became one of the 16 sister cities of Nanjing, known as one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China. Seo said a delegation of Daejeon’s culture and art center visited Nanjing to have exchanges with the city’s calligraphers in the 1990s.  Later calligraphers from two sides frequently visited each other almost every year. A section in the Nanjing Library is dedicated to Korean books, supplemented by new books from the Daejeon Library every year. Similarly, the Nanjing Library also sends 1,000 Chinese books a year to the Daejeon Library.

“South Korean companies have gradually developed from Chinese coastal cities to cities like Suzhou and Wuxi and then Nanjing, in line with the law of development,” said Seo. “When we first came to the Chinese market, our simple goal was just to find a labor force. Now, we need the top-caliber talent and science and technology here. The Jiangsu market is getting better and better with abundant talent and technical conditions, which meets well the requirements of South Korean companies."

Today, Nanjing is home to most South Korean companies in Jiangsu. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the sister city relationship in 2014, Daejeon Science Park and Nanjing High-tech Industrial Development Zone signed a memorandum of friendship and cooperation. This year, Nanjing New Port Development Zone will also enter a friendship agreement with the Daejeon Creative Economy and Innovation Center. In commenting on the progress, Seo said the friendship between Nanjing and Daejeon is on a long-term basis just a steady stream.
