Videos of a middle-aged man singing affectionately went viral on Douyin, a popular short-video app in China, May 16.

In the videos, the singer, dressed in blue work-wear, perfectly imitates the voices of famous Chinese singers such as Andy Lau, Dave Wang Chieh and Emil Wakin Chau. In the background, a shabby vegetable greenhouse seems interestingly out of place.

The performer, Yao Buqiang, is 35 years old. He lives with his parents, wife and son in a makeshift greenhouse built on vegetable plots in Longhutang, Xinbei District of Changzhou, Jiangsu Province. The family makes a living on vegetable growing. During the day, Yao has to tend to his vegetables. But at night, he likes to listen to music and record songs. Last week, he uploaded some of his latest impersonation videos online and became a star surprisingly. Within one week, his works have garnered nearly five million likes on Douyin.

“I hope I can sing for more people and perform on CCTV (China Central Television),” said Yao, describing singing as a true pleasure for him. He said that his skills are not good enough and therefore need more practice. Yao also hopes to get some professional advice on singing.
